When asked if grafting different cacti seems 'unnatural':

As for going against nature by grafting... nah! The tissues of these cacti heal and grow together as though they WANT to be grafted. The spirits of these two plants (T. pachanoi & L. williamsii) are kin and they help one another. If it went against nature, the tissues wouldn't graft. As it is, they graft together very very well. Then again, I have some very "non-Indian" ideas about life and nature. Certainly there are actions and practices that can be defined as good or evil... some actions make the world a better place for life... other actions damage the ability of life to flourish. I suppose that is how I define evil... something which impairs, retards, or otherwise extinguishes life (life in the grand sense) and love. That which promotes life and love is good. With that in mind, anything can be used for good or evil. A piece of metal can be used as a tool or as a weapon. Peyote can be used for healing or used as a cheap high. The THING itself possesses neither good nor evil as an intrinsic quality... it's the person who wields the item who assigns good or evil to its use. Also, I feel that everything on this planet is natural. When a bird builds a nest from available resources, we call that "natural". When termites build towering insect cities in Africa or Australia, we call that nature. When otters use rocks to break open abalone shells, we call that "nature". I say that when man builds a tool like a bulldozer from the metals of the earth... THAT is ALSO "nature". What men do is no different from what animals do... it's simply more complex. The idea of "artificial" doesn't make sense to me. Skyscrapers, automobiles, and computers are all part of nature because they were all created by an animal who extracted the materials from the flesh of the earth and reshaped them to his/her own purposes. Now, having said that, we have the ability to utilize these tools to promote life, or to destroy it. As such, we brand ourselves as "good" or "evil", depending upon our actions. If we choose evil, then we will destroy the complex web of interdependence that keeps us alive. If that happens, men will no longer walk the face of the earth and life will evolve to fill the niches that we left empty. New species will rise to continue the tenuous thread of life on this planet. If we choose "good", then perhaps we will one day create a living paradise where our dreams will be externalized into reality and we will spread the seed of life to other orbs in the universe. Other planets are doing that as we speak! I've seen it in visions. The universe is teaming with life and its primary goal is to spread throughout creation. We, as living biological entities are the senses of God. What we see, God sees. As we feel, see, hear, smell and taste our world, so does God. Life is simply the universe (God) looking back on itself in wonder and awe. We are all part of God as surely as the cells that make up the marrow of your bones are part of you. We are embedded in God... he /she is not "out there"...he/she is here and he/she IS us. We are God... we are all the same person. Each molecule, each protozoa, each photon flying through the universe, each individual human being is simply God experiencing him/herself from a different perspective. THAT is how I can believe that EVERYTHING on this planet, from prepackaged hot dogs to wild Amazonian flowers are "natural". We are all God.

Clarifying 'we are all god':

When I said that we are all embedded in God, I didn't mean to imply that we are each endowed with the God-like powers of omnipotence... at least not in this realm. I like to think of it this way...
The only thing that exists in the whole universe (at all) is God. God, as such, is no more male/female than is a mote of dust or a spiral galaxy. God is the complete entirety of existence. Your spleen is part of you. Your skin is part of you. Your mitochondria are part of you. All the individual cells of your body are YOU. In the larger sense, you, your neighbors, the neighbor's dog, the planet that you live on... all of these are part of the body of God. The idea that we are separate and "fallen" from God is an illusion. We are no more separate from God than are the cells of our own body separate from us. The idea that we are separate from nature is also an illusion. We like to think that we are set apart from the natural world and that we have dominion over it. We walk around this world happily oblivious to the fact that we are inescapably part of the web of nature until we are reminded of our smallness by a tidal wave, earthquake, tornado, or flash flood. When we are faced with the awesome power of "nature", we realize that we are still subject to its laws. Man once sought to build a tower that would ascend him to the throne of heaven. There man would take his place as God's equal. This was called the Tower of Babel. Prior to the creation, the angel of light, Lucifer, also sought to set himself above God and was caste down for it. The idea that we are above and separate from nature is equally arrogant. We arose from nature just as everything else did and we will be bound by it's laws until the end of time as we know it. If a thing can be done by or created by mankind, then it is in accord with laws of nature. Whether or not it SHOULD be done or created leads us back into a discussion of the true nature of good and evil. But I digress... The laws of nature, of God, reign supreme. We can not rise above nature (above God) because we are a part of it. You, as an individual are special in the eyes of God because you represent a unique viewpoint on creation. YOU are the eyes of God when you open them each morning. Your dreams are the dreams of God when you close your eyes to sleep. We are, each of us, a unique facet in the incredible prism of creation. And as God holds it up to his eye to look through, he is looking through the eyes of us all. When we die, the only judgment that we will receive will be the judgments we pass on ourselves. We will weep for every sin because we will realize that every trespass we have visited upon others, we have really visited upon ourselves. Some will weep more than others. At the end of time, however, we will forgive and be forgiven and we will all come together as one complete entity. We will all coalesce into a single heart, mind, and soul that we presently call God. Our identities as men and women, as humans will cease to be important. On that day, we will all laugh as one. God will laugh. We will laugh at all of the heartbreak, at all of the triumph, at all of the ridiculous tales of love, war, and folly that were our lives. We will all laugh as one, as God, at the fun and comical game we played together. THAT is the cosmic joke at the end of time..... we are all the same person. Anyone who has taken a large dose of psilocybin or mescaline will tell you this. Anyone who has passed near death due to hunger or fever will tell you this. Anyone who has danced, prayed or meditated for days on end without food or drink will tell you this. In my culture, Coyote Man is a clown. He is like the Kashari. He represents the creator spirit. In my religion, the dancing clowns and the tricksters who behave as fools are actually the most powerful aspects of God. They act as fools because they have seen how the world ends. When you see what happens at the end of time, you stop resisting the world... you stop struggling against the current. You simply go back to your life and take your place in the Grande Comedy that we call life. You take your place and let the film play out without a fuss. The most enlightened individuals of the world are the quiet smiling fools who live their lives without a fuss and are thankful for the life that they have. They need not crow from the mountaintops... they have seen the final moment of creation and have settled in for the ride. They truly understand what is meant by this saying....
"Before enlightenment: Chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment: Chop wood, carry water".
They know the truth.... we are all the same person.
